I have been involved with the Monsignor Schnacky Community Players in Mendon, NY for many years. I designed and (with the help of some selfless volunteers) executed a set design for a three-act melodrama for the 2008, 2009 and the 2010 (this one) seasons.
The 2010 season melodrama, entitled "Those Wedding Bells Shall Not Ring Out - or - The Bride Wore Green Chili Peppers " was set in an herb pharmacy which doubles as a chili parlour! Talk about a design challenge! I used a darker color on the walls because I knew I wanted contrast between the backdrop and the items I would have to paint on the shelves such as glass jars, metal canisters, and chemistry ephemera. The pharmacy also houses a chili parlour, so I placed splashes of red throughout the set to compliment the chili pepper themed fabric for the tablecloths that the director chose. This set design also features botanical prints, drawer labels that I created on the computer, and hanging dried herbs, all of which are painted on.
The safe in the center of the stage is hand-crafted, by an incredibly talented wood craftsman named Patrick Ashley. Please visit his web site and check out his amazing work.
And the backwards lettering on the window, and the sign above the main counter was done with the help of my friend Julie at Words2Paint.com!
